The G8 and the arms trade

Amnesty International, the International Action Network on Small Arms, and Oxfam International recently released a damning report on the role played by the world's wealthiest nations in the proliferation of conventional weapons. It explains:

...contrary to their responsibilities and legal obligations, the G8
countries - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian
Federation, the UK and the USA - are still supplying weapons and
munitions to irresponsible end users. Six of the eight G8 countries are
among the top 10 largest global arms exporters, and all of the eight
export large amounts of major conventional weapons or small arms.

The report is available here.

thanks for this. gonna read it when i have the time.it's no surprise that weapons come from the g8 countries because they have the technology to build it, while the users of this technology are too busy at war to develop any. there is big bucks in making this stuff. if i was an unethical bastard (which I may well be) and if the arms companies were public companies, I may well invest so I can make big $$$$$ and retire and never work again as a lawyer.

in the usa alone, the arms industry is big, apparently fueled by the need for prisons to have all theses 'self defence' technology. Apparenlty there is a convention every year as well where prison officers can go and check out the latest gear. I'll have to dig up this article and pdf it for u

I'd be interested in having a look at that article.

The criminal justice system is a big corporate monster now. It still amazes me that Amercians who go to prison can never vote, ever.

Did you know Australia's detention system was set up by an American prison company?
